The two of us went counter-clockwise in order to ascend that nasty steep stretch on Noon Peak. It was rather sporty going up, and I would consider it very, very tricky going down. Trails were broken out the whole way, but most of the traffic had gone to Jennings Peak, so the last section up to Sandwich Dome had had only a couple of snowshoers. The snow there was loose, and there were divots the entire way from a bare-booter. Our two-way transit of that upper length of the SMT smoothed it back out pretty well. Someone had skied up the Drake's Brook Trail. We wore snowshoes the entire way; microspikes stayed in the backpacks. It was a bright, sunny, calm day. The only wind was a slight breeze at the summit. Views were vast and spectacular. Great day in the woods. We saw no one else on the trails. |
