Comments
Comments: From the car, we walked along the plowed Roy Rd for approx 1 mile to a hairpin turn. Here we put on our snowshoes and walked NE on an unplowed logging road(dashed line on topos) for about .5 mile until we reached snomo trail 5 at 2150' elevation. We turned W onto the trail and soon passed the jct with snomo trail 131 going NW. We continued on trail 5, and about .5 mile later we reached the top of the bump situated S of the North peak. We turned off the snomo trail and started the bw to the summit. Soon found the recognized high point with its jar and pill bottle.
From here we did not set a bearing straight for Whipple which would have led us through a marsh, but for a point SE of the marsh located in the sag. Heading NE we crossed snomo trail 131 at 2100' elevation. Upon crossing the snomo trail we entered larger but tight spruce, then tight smaller spruce, white cedar and alders. We were able to snake our way through the alders and cedars, avoiding the slow moving water channels. Apparently we had crossed the sag too close to the marsh. After exiting this low area we made our way N initially through frustrating whips but then wide open woods to the recognized high point. Here too there was a jar and a pill bottle. We retraced our steps through the sag and onto snomo trail 131 that we followed S for approx .5 mile to snomo trail 5. Followed snomo trail 5 for a few hundred feet before turning off onto the logging road and back to Roy Rd.
breaking conditions on high flotation snowshoes - very good - 1-8" on a supportive crust
grades - always easy
vegetation - mostly wide open woods, whippy areas, clear cuts, tight spruce, alders, white cedars in the marsh
