Comments
Comments: Not great conditions today, unfortunately. Lonesome Lake Trail was ok — packed snow for the most part — from Lafayette Campground to the Lake. At the Lake, the streams are flowing and the wooden bridges were tough to navigate in our snowshoes. There were some boys playing ultimate frisbee on the Lake which was still frozen despite temps above freezing. Kinsman Ridge Trail was ok until we hit the ridge between Northeast Cannon Ball and Cannon. The final steep push to the summit was treacherous, with unstable snow and roots and rocks making for tricky footing. We followed the ridge trail over the summit and down the north side of Cannon to the tram parking area. At elevation, the trail was in good shape, with powdery snow starting to fall; but the further we descended the slushier it got. We were passed by a couple who decided it would be fun for them to butt-slide all the way down; I hope they had fun because it turned the trail into a slushy ice-luge. Once it freezes again it will be treacherous. By the bottom there were roots and rocks emerging everywhere and the snowshoes were more a hindrance than a help, but I didn’t want to create postholes that would only freeze tonight. We made it to the parking lot and were glad to be done! We need a cold spell and some more snow to re-stabilize this trail.
