From Depot Camp, the first 2.8 miles of Tripoli Rd. were groomed by WV, which made for easy snowshoeing. After that there was only a faint snowmobile track for the next mile and a half (between the Mt. Osceola trailhead and the East Pond trailhead), and I had easy trail breaking on about 4†of powder.
Little East Pond Trail was of course not broken out, and it took me a good while to ascend this trail through deep powder. Blowdowns were minimal, but there were a lot of water crossings over small unfrozen streams.
I didn’t notice any ski or snowshoe tracks coming over from the East Pond Loop, and I wonder if this place receives much visitation in winter. A great backcountry snowshoe destination on a bluebird day — about 13 miles roundtrip from Waterville. |
