Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Kineo, NH
Trails
Trails: Hubbard Brook Trail, roadwalk, Mt. Kineo Trail, bushwhack, Donkey Hill Cutoff, Three Ponds Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, April 28, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: room for a handful of cars at the trailhead just off route 118 (it is signed with a hiker sign on 118 near the height of land). My low-clearance RWD car parked OK in the non-tarred pulloff.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Standing/Running Water on Trail, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many stream crossings, most were OK crossing on submerged rocks; ice/snow near crossings VERY unstable - sank up to my knees at times/most times; Crossing at junction of Donkey Hill Cutoff and Kineo Tr (Brown Brook) was ferocious and ROARING!!!!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Three Ponds Tr north of the three ponds looked essentially abandoned - MANY blowdowns. Donkey Hill Cutoff had MAJOR drainage issues. Also, signage differentiating between snowmobile trails and hiking trails was very weak and confusing. Much of the trails near the ponds are skimobile trails and sometimes I wasn't sure if I was on or off the actual hiking trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: DON'T bring a dog on this loop until the snow is GONE!!! I postholed even with snowshoes.
Bugs
Bugs: yeah!!! NONE!!!

Comments
Comments: Great day to get these trails/peak!!! Hubbard Brook Tr was really nice!!!! Lots of beaver activity. Put on snowshoes above 2000'. Enjoyed Mt Kineo Trail. Bushwack to Mt Kineo from height of land was very easy/open even tho there were many false summits. No views due to spitting rain. Showers on/off after the crack of noon... eh, who needs raingear - it was a nice warm rain :) This hike took a LOT longer than anticipated due to spring conditions (punching thru snow, sinking boots constantly, losing trail, etc.). Still, an AWESOME day out there!!!!
