Comments
Comments: This was the perfect day for a foray above treeline. Temps in the 20's with overcast conditions meant consistent footing with no soft snow or post holes. The Jewell had been packed down but had just the right amount of give to it. Above treeline the snow on the Jewell was more granular but very stable. The Gulfside was a mixed bag of hard-packed snow with limited ice and occasional softer spots with a few rocky areas that had less snow but were still easy to negotiate. Up & down the Loop Trail was pretty straightforward. Light snow then fog on the way back but that dissipated as I approached the Jewell junction. Going down was quick with an inch of new powder to soften the fast descent. Not a single soul on the trail or in sight all day! Had crampons & spikes with me but kept snowshoes on for the entire hike. Total time 5:15
