Did a two day overnight hike with a stay at Gr. Bear. Day one we hiked the unbroken Hurricane trail. Lots of moose and fox sign up high. We hiked up close to the viewpoint ( about 1/2 hr to 45 min. ) on Hurricane Mt. The trail looked like it wasn't broken out in a long time. Used snowshoes and only broke through about an inch or so. The breaking trail wasn't bad but....it was REALLY warm, about 7 C ( 48 F ) which made it more challenging than the trail breaking itself. Day two we went up Glencliff to South Peak and Moosilauke summit. Glencliff has a solid monorail as of this posting. Microspikes / crampons or snowshoes will work. Saw some folks bare booting which later in the day would more than likely lead to post holing. Above treeline there is a solid base of crusty snow and ice. The summit was windy but strangely not really that cold for Feb. It's been a weird, weird winter |
