From the car we followed a wide road(appears as a double dashed line on Caltopo) 0.3 mile to a large bridge crossing to the NE side of Roberts Brook. Approx 0.4 mile later, close to the road's crossing to the W side of the brook(no bridge), the owner has built a pedestrian bridge. We chose not to cross here, due to heavily flowing Roberts Brook, correctly assuming that we would not be able to cross back to the E side at 1600' to follow a large road going E (appears as a double dashed line on Caltopo). So we decided to bw on the E side of the brook always in wide open hardwoods providing that we didn't travel too close to the brook. At about 1400' we stopped paralleling the brook to follow an old logging road going NNE. This eventually turned out to be a bad idea because this old logging road led us into almost impenetrable young growth hardwoods. Becoming quickly frustrated with these woods we changed course to the NW hitting the large logging road at 1750'. We followed this road, from which all culverts were removed, E approx 0.5 mile, just over a large bridge. From this point we bw NNE to the col W of East Long easily following one skidder road after another. We then followed the crest of the ridge to E Long, ascending a short steep pitch before arriving on the recognized summit with its new register.
We followed out tracks back to the large logging road, and W along the road to the point where we had emerged from the whippy hardwoods. We decided not to return via the whippy woods but instead to follow the large logging road W to Roberts Brook. Upon reaching the brook we bw S until we met our ascending tracks at 1400' and back to the car.
Great views E and S from the skidder roads leading to the col.
bw surface conditions - no breaking, fully supportive on low flotation snowshoes
vegetation density - wide open hardwoods, mixed open woods on summit, stretch of whippy hardwoods that we avoided on the descent
grades - mostly easy, a few moderate, one short steep
