 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parking access is clean and clear. When I arrived, I was the only car. On leaving, the place was almost entirely jammed -- about half the people were from out of town. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Mud - Significant, Snow - Spring Snow, Slush, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Minor drainages that can be stepped across easily for the most part. There are a couple ice-bridged crossings where the bridges were clearly on their last legs. Apart from that, there's a section of around 30 or so feet where you walk up a drainage. It's pretty muddy at this point, and full of leaves. The top, squishy layer of mud is under an inch thick, and footing is solid underneath, so no need to step to the side and widen the trail. You're wearing Gore-Tex boots anyway, right? What's to worry? |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail is in good shape at the moment. Nearly the entire thing still has a pretty solid base. A light layer of mashed potatoes on top will steal a little of every footstep if you're just wearing Micro Spikes. Consider longer crampons to punch through to the more solid stuff underneath. No real blow-downs to speak of -- just a couple errant broken branches here and there that were easily tossed to the side. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
A couple pups having the best day of their lives. Awesome. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Not yet, thankfully. |

It was a fine outing. You know how Middle Sister is sometimes better than Chocorua, or Adams is better than Washington, because you can see the latter from the former? Yeah, Hedgehog occupies a similar niche. Today featured stellar views of Passaconaway, the Tripyramids, Carrigain, the Moats, and Chocorua. And looking through Paugus Pass, a little sliver of Mt Shaw, in the Ossipee range. Wow!
Photos are on my blog, with a lot more detail. |
