Comments: Great rainy day out. Never once put micro spikes on, we didn’t need them. We came in via the Rail Trail until we reached Waumbek Junction. The small trails were interesting and gave us good views of Cherry Pond and geese. Little Cherry Pond Trail was nice, and looked like it hadn’t seen traffic in a while. We did see a few moose prints here and there, looked like he postholed pretty badly along the way! There is a new cross country trail (Moose Way) coming from the Mud Pond trail, and connecting to the north side of the LCP loop. It is WINTER ONLY, and looked pretty wet from either end. We continued back across the tracks and onto the Ramparts Path which gave us our final views of Cherry Pond.

Colonel Whipple Trail started out nicely, but the water, mud and less than stable monorail put up a good fight. It was a long 2.2 miles is all I’ll say. We laughed through it, but there is a lot of water on this trail. On, in and all around it! Once out of the swamp and massive blow down section it turns into a quasi style logging road which was very wet. This would be much better in drier weather, maybe full winter or fall when the bugs are at a lull.

Mud Pond trail and it’s boardwalk were beautiful. We saw one car leaving as we pulled in, and only one other car in the lot - we never saw them either!
