Walked up the continuation of New Colony Road passing a beautiful little pond with a beaver lodge near shore. (Unsure if it was still occupied but there was no evidence of freshly cut trees). Continued past the pond until I reached an old logging yard and a junction of the Mowglis Trail. From here you could see Cataloochee and I headed in that direction finding a well-worn herd path that took me to the summit. Found a tree with a yellow 'X' and also the recognized HOL about 40 feet from that on a similar bump. SIgned in and returned easily on the same track. That pond was a gift, because there was a moose browsing on the weeds on the opposite shore, What a great treat. I spent the next 20 minutes watching the moose eat and me feeding the deer flies from the seclusion of the woods. I finally left after the flies became too hungry. |
