Hiked south on the AT from the Dartmouth Skiway (Grafton Turnpike). Took the AT the Trapper John Shelter, talked to a few kids at the shelter then hiked back up the access trail about 100 yards and found the abandoned AT. Hiked along the old trail, saw a DOC blaze and then began to climb Bear Hill, staying between the cliffs. Mostly open woods and a few rock climbs. Found the peak and jar. I then followed yellow blazes that are probably corridor boundary markers for the AT, but it also seemed to be a trail that took me down some steep ledges. I lost the yellow blazes at a stone wall. I then headed southeast toward Holt's Ledge. After a sometimes sticky whack I hit the AT where it runs along the ledges. I spent time hoping to see a few peregrine falcons, ravens or buzzards flying over head, but it was even too hot for them. Returned to Grafton Turnpike via AT. |
