Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Unmarked pull off for the eastern trailhead and I believe it was the same for the western although the pull of is larger and usually fuller so more noticeable. If coming from the east, the eastern trailhead is just before the entrance to the Balsams on the opposite side of the road in a pull off. One other car when I got there at just before noon and they were leaving when I returned. Group of friends from PA. Nice chatting with some of them briefly. Room for a half dozen plus cars. No cars at the western trailhead but room for well over a dozen cars there.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I don’t believe the trail is marked but it is easy to follow. Just make sure to go the correct way at all the intersections with the Cohos Trail and such. I believe there’s also an unmarked herd path that serves as a short cut toward the beginning of the west end of the trail that bypasses a switchback so beware of that. I don’t think there were any blowdowns on the western end of the trail but there were two or three duck unders on the eastern end. Watch your head! It’s easy to not look up on such a steep and grueling trail!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Most dogs (and humans) couldn’t handle the eastern trail to the top but the western trail should be fine for dogs. Dogs would absolutely be leashed on the ledge as a hyperactive dog could easily run into a small kid and knock them off the ledge to their death. Please be considerate and think of these things.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies on top and mosquitos down low. Not awful but pretty bad.

Comments
Comments: This was stop two on my long haul up to the Connecticut Lakes region to redline up there yesterday. I needed the eastern portion of this loop so I stopped on my way up to redline it. Not wanting to descend that way (you could do it as the group I met from PA did but I wouldn’t recommend it and it wouldn’t be fun, especially without trekking poles; the steepness is one thing but the very slippery, powdery dry dirt is another thing...it would be very easy to lose your footing on the way down and hurt yourself) I made a loop and walked back along the road 0.7mi.

The trails are dry but still slippery coming up from the east with how poor the footing is. I lost my footing once but luckily didn’t hurt myself. I’m considered a fast hiker and I think I averaged less than 3/4 mph on the way up. VERY steep. Great views from the top as always. Be careful! Not recommended for people with a fear of heights 😂
