Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Fourth Connecticut Lake, NH
Trails
Trails: Fourth Connecticut Lake Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, June 23, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking area is not signed but is just a paved pulloff on the right immediately before customs. I was the only car there when I started and returned. Room for at least a half dozen cars but I doubt it’s usually very busy.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The two outlet streams were very easily rock hopped. In fact, I think one may have been more mud than a stream...we need some more rain!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail is well signed (including in/out of the woods at the boundary swath) and easy follow but was only marked by the nature conservancy arrows along about half (eastern) of the loop oddly. One small, old, tree hanging over the trail on the eastern end of the loop. Taller people will have to duck under it. The part along the border swath is overgrown and should be cut back. I’d watch out for ticks.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None seen but this would be a fine trail for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: I think mostly mosquitos were out. I’d watch out for ticks along the border swath as it’s overgrown.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: This trail starts at the border of the U.S. and Canada and you actually get to walk in both countries! How unique :D White signs that says “Hiking Trail” direct you around customs to the start of the trail. You walk 0.7mi along the border swath, then enter the woods and descend briefly to the start of a loop around the pond. The part along the border swath ascends moderately but felt brutal in the heat 😂 I felt like I was in two different weather zones during the hike as it sprinkled/lightly rained while I was around the pond and was much cooler but shortly after I got back along the border swath the plants became dry again and I walked back into a heat wave. Oh well.

The trail was mostly dry with a lot of minor mud that has dried very well along the short descent to the pond. A few spots of more severe mud on the loop around it. No one else seen but saw some foot prints, mood prints, and I believe dog prints in the mud along the trail around the pond.
