Followed the Davis Path hoping to find the bootleg trail but no go, so started our bushwhack just a bit past the Wilderness sign. Nice open woods and moderate going for the first part but as we moved up more towards Bemis Ridge, the terrain got steadily steeper. At one point, we came to a cliff band which we followed along its base until we were able to start climbing steeply once again. Finally gained the ridge where we happened upon the upper portion of the bootleg trail. It seems like a herd path at first but as you get closer to the summit you see occasional faint dark green blazes. The trail lead us right up to the summit ledges. We scoured the area for a jar to no avail so hung a new one. Just below the summit there is a ledge with a cairn and a nice view through the trees of Mt. Willey. Other peaks barely visible also. We headed back down the bootleg trail hoping to see where it might lead us. Got to below the ridge where it just seemed to vanish. Took a heading for the Davis Path and made our way somewhat steeply down. Those noice open woods had lots of leaves which were nice on the way up but made for slippery going in sections on the way down. We popped out almost exactly where we had started our whack! The rest is history. |
