Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We drove up Bear Mtn. Road 0.9 mi. to the Bear Mtn. Trailhead and parked along the side of the dirt road at a bump out. While a high clearance truck could possibly have driven further (up to the Elwell junction), that's as far as the Subaru was going to go. :-)

Comments
Comments: Lovely fall hike redlining along the Elwell Trail/ridge. Went up Bear Mtn. Trail, continued NW on Elwell Trail just under 2 miles to the junction of Welton Falls Trail-North, then turned it around, hiked Elwell Trail back to Bear Mtn. Road, then hiked 0.2 mi. downhill to our car.

This is a perfect time to hike these trails. The super steep rocky cliff are is dry, and without a lot of leaves yet fallen, footing was fantastic.

There were a couple of places where the yellow blazed trail went around a PUD, but we noted that the old Camp Mowglis markers went over the PUDS. So we hiked the trail out, and the PUDS on the return.

When the Elwell Trail crosses the power line, it wasn't entirely clear at first glance where the trail went, but it turned out to be simple: when you leave the woods, hike straight across the grass towards the power line towers on a herd path; turn right on the main ATV road under the power lines; turn left after a few yards as you approach a second tower, onto another grassy path towards the woods line on the other side.

Fun day out with Steve. And this hike closed out all redline trails in the entire Cardigan area.
