Another one of those loop hikes we are becoming famous for. We dropped down to an old woods road directly below our parking spot but after following it about .1 mile, we saw that it was going down and away from the mountain. Started bushwhacking up towards the southern high point of the mountain. Encountered some heavy hobble bush but finally emerged into clearer woods which lasted as we made our way up to the ridge line on a moderate slope. Once at the highpoint of the ridge, we adjusted our heading toward the main summit. Not too bad going until we hit a long stretch of pencil pine. Not horrible but we did have to wind our way through them all the way to the summit. Fortunately, the closer we got, the more moose paths. Looked around a bit then followed a moose path to what seemed to be a lower bump and there was the canister high up on a tree. We signed in then headed back the way we had come staying a little more north and east to avoid the pencil pine forest. Much nicer woods but we had to keep readjusting our heading as the slope of the mountain kept pulling us eastward. Alternately slabbed and descended until we happened upon an old woods road which thankfully was heading straight towards Route 118 although dumping us out about a mile from our car. Not a bad roadwalk back though and a nice fall day. |
