Started up Falling waters and it seemed like an average late fall day, lots of traffic from the day before. Spikes went on before one of the bigger crossings. The ridge was majestically vacant and windblown with lots of new snow that hid ankle-twisting rocks and holes to keep my attention. Using the pole to test the depth of the drifts a few were 2+ feet.
Leaving Lafayette summit we experienced a few really epic gusts but that didn't last long. There were a few places I got off the trail, where the cairns were few and far between, the snow depth was consistently 10 to 12 inches and the trail was obscure. Once we got below treeline it was a walk in the woods with fresh powder over ice-coated rocks then balling up spikes and snow melting off the trees.
Saw 4 people all day. Nice day out to get a few peaks and views with Redlining Rick Simmons. |
