Headlamped 6 miles into Franconia brook last night. This morning, finished the last mile to red rocks brook and followed it up, staying on the left side of all tributaries. This is a relatively easy bushwhack to follow although I found it thickest at the beginning and near the end by Bear Pond. In-between are some lovely sections of stream. It starts to dry up about 3/4 of the way up although there is one spring that I refilled my water at. It gets very thick within the last 200 yrds but quiet rewarding. A lovely glacial cirque, no wildlife today just the sound of the wind.
On the way down- was able to find the old logging grade/road (pretty overgrown and filled with blowdowns) but has a nice herd/game path to follow. Once it started veering toward 13 falls I cut back left towards the brook; although I have read you can follow it all the way out and will connect back with Franconia brook closer to the tentsite side. A lovely summer feeling day for November |
