Beautiful, albeit chilly and windy, day on Mt. Osceola. Put the spikes on past the Greely Ponds sign and kept them on until returning to the sign on the descent. Lot's of ice, an inch thick in places, spikes are an absolute must. The ice made the going pretty slow and the steepness didn't help much either. The chimney below the main summit was more fun than it was challenging, the ice actually made going up easier in this case as I was able to stick right to it with my spikes, not sure how I would've gone up if just wet. I did use the bypass coming down, I don't recommend coming down the chimney, too many drops with not enough footing.
Some of the best views in the WMNF and in the whole North East, highly recommend this hike, just be prepared! |
