Isolation, boott spur (attempt)
Boott spur trail, Glen boulder, davis path
Up boott spur trail, intended to overnight iso but it got colder than I was comfortable for margin of safety so I bailed and descended glen boulder. Both have now been microspike- broken out, snow shoes roll ankles in this kind rock hop. Its that loose powder snow right now, below treeline is 18 inch to 36 inches, above you have drifts only. Alpine would be bare rock to wading waist deep powder. Axe recommended for two reasons; the main is that on the Boott Spur trail there are major drifts of unconsolidated powder near the edges on both sides of the ridge you follow up. There was only one I felt compelled to avoid. A slide in this section seems unlikely and I doubt you'd find good purchase in an arrest, but I found it is useful for self belay more to help the slog up than as fall protection. Both trails are inherently safe from objective risk, however the terrain immediately beside both trails is not. As always, make sound judgement, but both trails have at least one set of boot(t) tracks now.
Didnt see anyone at any point during this outing.
Originally wanted to do the engine hill bushwack, the visitor center was the only place I could park without worrying about making it on the way out. |
