Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 26, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Well plowed lot off US 302 that was completely dirt and solid today. Looks to hold numerous cars. Maybe 30?
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Plenty of rain and snow melt off coupled with ice covered rocks make the one major water crossing more treacherous than normal. We accomplished this without getting feet wet. But it took some contemplation.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One blow down across the trail (me thinks it was on the Jackson trail...). All signs up and in good shape. Summit carin intact.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Normally a great trail for dogs. Today’s ice may be too much for them.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Pair of sunglasses up near the summit. I had to leave them as I had no room to stop on the ledge ice to pick them up.

Comments
Comments: Out and back route up Webster-Jackson and Jackson branch. These are well blazed in blue, though the Jackson branch is much, MUCH less blazed. Carins mark the way above treeline.

Footwear: I wore full crampons. The ice was pretty tenacious in short, though very anti-friction, segments. My son wore regular microspikes and did just fine. But he is made of rubber and just bounces off things when he falls down... I am more prone to breakage, thus crampons for me. The front teeth provided so much purchase on those clear, thick ice dams.

We both carried snowshoes in hopes that there may be some snow at higher elevations. There was snow up high, but it was very compacted and icy on the trail. Alas, the snowshoes rode along on the packs.

The ice flow on the summit ledges was not bad at all. Plenty of rock around to provide traction while negotiating the frozen flow. We really had no issue. The conditions today were much more like April than the end of December.
