I put micro spikes on 30' up OBP because with last night's dusting of snow the monorail was very slippery. Took them off soon after the left hand turn that starts the climb up the spine. On again at ~3500' as the snow pack seemed to start there. The snow lasted until above the hut at which point it was a mixture of rock, snow and ice. I wore the spikes all the way across the ridge, taking them off, I believe, at ~2300'. Maybe a bit early since I did slip a couple of times. Gotta love the poles in these conditions. Lots of ice, hidden by the snow, and hiking alone led me to crissen a second pare of rock spikes (argggg). The monorail between Little Haystack and Liberty Springs trail is solid, though not as solid as more well used trails, so the snowshoes went for a ride. I only saw 4 people till after Flume, and 5 more at the top of the slide trail. |
