The hiking trail remains largely unblazed. I usually do this hike in winter, but with the minimal snow I was reminded how severe the erosion is above the snowmobile trail split. |

This was a good choice for a super cold day due to wind. Snowshoes are not needed at all right now. Snow depths are very minimal and spikes are fine. You could even bareboot this, but there is some ice above the first switchback. The snomo trail also has some stretches of ice, but completely avoidable. Looked like no one had been down to the NW outlook in a bit.
Bushwhacking to the NE peak was much easier than in summer, through mostly open woods. On the way there, I skirted around the middle bump on the ridge, but on the way back went right over it, and it was a bit thicker with many blowdowns, but not horrible. A new register has been placed at the summit and I admit I'm bummed to see that the old AMC register has been removed. :(
For the descent, I skipped the lower section of the hiking trail and continued down the snomo trail to the end of Lower Doetown Rd.
Pretty frigid on the summit so I didn't stay long, but fairly comfortable in the woods. |
