Comments
Comments: Snowshoes are recommended. The lower half of this trip only requires spikes. The road walk and trails up until about half way up the Oak Ridge Cutoff are a chewed up mess with only a few inches of snow underneath and I don't think snowshoes would help. However, beyond that, snowshoes would have been a plus, but I left mine in the car since I didn't think they would be needed. Followed a pair of bare booters all the way to the summit. Stayed in their tracks so as not to make more of a mess. Once on High Ridge, it is wide so that you could still use snowshoes on untrammeled snow. Anywhere from 6 inches to a foot on High Ridge. I had hoped when I got to the section that was open to snowmobiles it would be packed down (the last 1.1 miles). However, there had been no traffic so far. The last .4 miles to the summit are packed hard due to hiker footprints (but not snowshoes).
