 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked 0.3 miles up Chickenboro Road (0.4 from Rt. 49) at a plowed bumpout outside chained/gated road. The bumpout (room for 3 cars) appeared to be a plow turnaround, and we would not have considered parking here had it been snowing. There were no signs prohibiting parking. |

 | Comments: |
We hiked along an old woods road that followed the south bank of Chickenboro Brook. There were numerous animal tracks, a cellar hole and interesting stone bridge abutments. At 1+ mile the road crosses Chickenboro Brook. From here we picked up a logging road that traversed SE'ly for about 0.8 mi. Along the way we passed artifacts from two separate logging camp sites. (You can pick up these roads from CalTopo.) At a point, we BW'd south/uphill towards the E col of Weetamoo through nice woods.
From the col we BW'd along the spine up towards Weetamoo, SW'ly, encountering a few tight spots as we approached the summit. On the summit (which is somewhat open), we did not find a jar. As it was cold and windy, we dropped to a known and more sheltered view ledge (awesome) a couple of hundred feet SW of the summit.
We descended N/NW'ly, cautiously at first, doing our best to negotiate the thick and steep sections, until the woods opened up again. We eventually hit our tracks on the logging road, which we followed back out.
Snowshoes door to door.
Great day out in the woods with Jazzbo. |
