Crossing the stream on Falling Waters was mostly fine. The last time, I had to take a running jump across to a rock. Not the safest, but I couldn't find another way with stable ice/rock. |

Glad I left the snowshoes in the car thanks to prior reports. Only about 20 yards on early Falling Waters needed trail breaking where snow drifts covered the monorail. Wore light traction all the way up and bare-booted over the ridge. I decided not to wear traction down Greenleaf Trail because it was so rocky. However, there are a few intensely icy patches I needed to put them back on for, which was not fun in the wind. Your spikes will get some abuse however you do it.
It was a clear, beautiful day and clouds covered most of the valleys on either side. Cannon's tower just peaked out sometimes. The wind was wild! Wore a balaclava and googles for most of the ridge. Not strictly necessary but I never had to worry about it. There was one steep section on OBP where people either glissaded down or fell and slid. While trying to kick steps down this area I also slipped, slid, and sadly bent a pole. Even so, would recommend going up FW and down OBP; next time I'll try the opposite. |
