| Comments: |
It was a lovely day with temps in the 20s and 30s, light wind, and sunny. All the trails were packed down. The ledges on Piper had a lot of ice. Microspikes were ideal, especially since there was little contact between spikes and rocks, although I barebooted up Whiteface easily. On Vista Trail I had a bucket list experience: seeing a live porcupine in the wild. At a distance I could see it in profile on the ground, sitting back and eating something in its hands. When I went closer (not too close) it kept turning its spiky back end in my direction. Then it crawled up into some very low branches of a small spruce tree. |
