Comments
Comments: I wore crampons for the entire day due to having dull rock spikes, wanting the frontpoints and extra traction, and to practice my footwork on the steep pitches. Definitely recommend switching to them at treeline for the section of Falling Waters Tr down to Shining Rock Spur and maybe farther down as my friend swapped into them here after wearing microspikes to this point. Old Bridal Path and Greenleaf are very well packed down. All of the snow drifts on the ridge were pretty chopped up from foot traffic by the time we started on the ridge after lunch on the summit of Lafayette. The section of Falling Waters Tr above Shining Rock Spur is a luge track to treeline and below the Spur to where it steepens at about 3000' is a narrow trail that is very choppy on the edges and asks for more snowshoe traffic. Below here it's very well packed. The ridge was a little boney in a few spots but overall was okay with my decision to leave crampons on for the ridge walk. Please bring snowshoes to properly reconsolidate trails after the snow in the next few days
