Followed the sno-mo trails(rds) from Camp Bell and used spike to the Orange Tr. Switched to snowshoes. Someone before the rains last week had snowshoed it so it was easy hiking in snowshoes. Spikes would have led to holes and slipping. Stayed in shoes the entire day. Snow and base was solid going up Orange but once on Mack Ridge the colder conditions and drifting made snowshoes mandatory. On the Orange/Red link someone had barebooted and left holes and postholes in the unconsolidated snow. The view from Round Pond was lovely. The Red Tr.(south) was holed/postholed up to the first road (sno-mo) section. When we went back into the woods the trail was untouched so we had great conditions down to the link with the sno-mo route. From there we we just barebooted back to the car. Except for some snowmobiles (all very courteous) we saw no others. |
