The Moat Mountain Trail from West Side Road to North Moat is well packed and in great shape, MICROspikes only. The summit of North Moat is wind blown and icy and there are a couple difficult scrambles on the ridge from North Moat to the Red Ridge trail junction. Snowshoes could be used here but I stuck with MICROspikes. The upper Red Ridge trail had tracks from one previous hiker. It is mostly breakable ice crust over a couple inches of sugar snow on top of a firmer layer below. Spikes were fine here too although it was slippery in spots. A couple snowshoers came up as I was descending but I'd imagine the upper part of the trail is still pretty crusty and broken up.
Except for the summit of North Moat it was a beautiful sunny day with minimal wind. |
