 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The first water crossing on Sandwich Mtn. Trail was completed snowed over and no problem. The other one on the bottom of Drake's Brook Trail has deteriorating snow bridges that won't last much longer. Then getting over will be a bit tricker. The Gaia app shows two other crossings on the Drake's Brook Trail higher up but the app has it wrong. The trail doesn't cross more than one, at the one near the bottom. |

The first part of the hike up to Noon Peak was unrelentingly up, and sometimes very steep. Reminds me of some of the tougher steeps in the higher Whites. Once past Noon summit, however, the trail over to Jennings and Sandwich Dome was more gentle and rolling, aside from a brief steep pitch up to the summit of Jennings. To avoid the steeps on the downside of Noon we took Drake's Brook down and it was incredibly easy. So flat most of the way that it wasn't even steep enough to butt slide. Definitely the easier way to get up and down these two mountains. The snow conditions were solid. We carried snowshoes but didn't need them. There were old postholes at the edges of the trails a lot of the time, but we didn't make any new ones today. Despite temps in the 40s it was solid underfoot. Snow was wet and sticky and kept clumping on our microspikes, which made it tricky on some of the steep parts. |
