Comments
Comments: We headed up the mountain at 10 am, yes it would have been better to start at 6 am when the snow would have still been cold and hard but it is a 3 hours drive from my home to Dixville Notch. We barebooted up the snowmobile trail to the col between Cave and the ridge to Rice. The trip to the top of Cave went well weaving our way up to stay out of the spruce. Found the recognized highpoint and visited the other two bumps that look like they might be higher. Denise and I followed opur tracks back down. The snow stuck to our snowshoes was heavy and annoying, we sunk down about 4 inches in the sticky lose snow that was resting on an icey crust that made it interesting sliding sometimes but snowshoe crampon stuck into that crust well. The long traverse to Rice went well and we stayed in open woods by keeping below the ridge on the northside. Once on Rice we back tracked a ways before jumping off and heading down and west to hit the wide open logging area. From the cleared logging area we could see the Northern Presidential Mountains and a wonderful view through Dixville Notch to Monadnock. We took a bearing and decided to walk/whack straight back to our car. This proved most interesting, some tight woods, lots of fresh moose tracks, daring rock hopable brook crossing and when we could see the pavement of Rte 26 a daunting crossing of a rotten beaver dam. We definately we made the most of the end of winter. Over 2 feet of snow up high. It appears we may have been the only winter visitors to these 3k peaks this winter.
