Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Maybe a dozen cars at Appalachia parking lot. It was a Monday. Construction on I-93 not a serious problem either up or back to MA due to light traffic.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No problems. Only real brook crossing was at Duck Fall. Beautiful piece of trail in that area.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No blowdowns. Recent trail work on either Valley Way or Watson Path, I forget which, with newly placed rocks on trailbed. Coming down the Air Line the water bars were newly cleared. Trail in great condition.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any dogs. Probably not a good hike for most dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: No serious issues with bugs as long as you kept moving. We didn't use any repellent. Mosquitoes at the lower elevations. Mean-looking horseflies further up but they didn't seem too hungry. No-see-ums at the summits but they weren't biting.

Comments
Comments: Beautiful day in the alpine zone. Trails uncrowded. Number 44 and 45 for my second time through the 48. Young Nick had a good time too. A long day, almost 9 hours. Met an old gentleman on the top of Madison. He looked like an AT thruhiker but he seemed pretty tired. He stumbled a little and I encouraged him to take a rest, which suggestion he gladly accepted. He complained about the fog making for poor picture taking. But it did clear up a short while later.
