Comments
Comments: From vehicle, walked along active logging road for .5 mile, then along previously groomed snomo corridor 3 (closed for the season). At 2.1 miles from vehicle, turned S at a logging yard and followed a wide skidder road until 2150’ where we entered an enormous clear cut. Continued S through clear cut and then skidder roads to major logging road. Continued on major logging road SSW to approx 2450’. Turned SSE off logging road to catch a skidder road at 2500’ that sliced through the dense spruce and brought us to the recognized high point of Goback Savage. This skidder road is visible on satellite views. Followed our tracks back to 2500’.
Followed bearing ENE through open young hardwoods to col. Headed for Stratford Notch Mt. summit through open woods eventually encountering a steep grade with apparently scratchy woods. Decided against climbing. Instead, turned E on skidder road that skirted the steeps. Soon reached ridge with gradual grade SE of summit. Turned N on skidder roads that brought us close to recognized high point with an empty pill bottle and a glass jar. Wide open summit is guarded by a potentially sprucy ring of trees. Followed tracks back to col. From col we bw NNW to meet our ascending tracks.
Most of today’s hike took place on logging roads or skidder roads. Very little actual bw.
grades - mostly easy, some moderate
vegetation density - sparse or wide open woods, a bit of open woods, very little scratchy stuff, no whips
breaking effort - 0 to 2”. By far, the easiest breaking conditions all season.
