What a difference a few days makes. The base area is mostly melted, as is the first few hundred vertical feet of the ski area. Snowshoes went on thereafter, with varying depths of spring snow and some bare spots in between. Remaining snow covered waterbars are collapsing. Perhaps the top half to top third of the ski area could still be skied (favoring the southern treeline), but with bare spots.
Generally plenty of snowpack on the snowmobile trails up to the communications tower. The herd path beyond there alternated between somewhat unstable monorail and bare ground. Bushwhack to the highpoint had a few deep pockets of snow, as well as some bare ground (including the highpoint itself).
Cloudy to start with snow flurries, giving way to sunny skies and warming temperatures. For the first time in however many trips up the slopes in the past few months, did not see a single skier. Probably not worth hiking/skinning up to ski patches down. Still enough snow in places to necessitate snowshoes, but not for long (unless we get some snow). |
