With the rain arriving later than originally forecast, there was a good window to get out this morning. As Red Hill is the only mountain with open (Squam Range trails/parking lots are closed), thawed trails (non-southern-exposed trails in the area tend to be quite muddy right now), I returned for the second day in a row.
Trail was damp in the upper elevations due to the peak being in a cloud. A few minor avoidable patches of snow remain, but snowshoes and Microspikes are not needed unless we get more snow. Only mud of note is adjacent to the Eagle Cliff Trail junction just before the summit.
Descended via the abandoned loop trail, which can be followed if one is familiar with it. Sparsely blazed at this point. Also virtually snow free.
A little bit raw with temperatures in the upper 30s/lower 40s, but otherwise nice to get out before the forecast rainy afternoon. Noted a few more trailing arbutus flowers opening up near the bottom of the trail. |
