 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Piper parking area was fine. The access road is a nightmare, as always, but at least it's short. The Iron Ranger is out again and there are envelopes available. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Postholes, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The wood bridges were sound. Watch out for rocks that look wet but are really icy. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Middle Sister is full of blowdowns. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw a few on Piper. |

|
 | Lost and Found: |
One gray hat found near the campsite spur on Piper. I left it on top of the Iron Ranger. I lost a blue glove on Middle Sister. |

 | Comments: |
The lower section of the Piper trail is completely passable with ice that is easy to avoid. Higher up, however, the snow is frozen and traction is a must. There is no choice but to walk in or around the post-holes, but the snow supported my weight in full gear. The trail over Middle Sister is not so much impassible but NO FUN with ice, sticks and unpleasantness. Wait until spring's a little further along, and then give my mitten a good home. |
