Pemigewasset trail up, Indian Head trail down
Almost all of the snow and ice is gone from the lower half of the mountain. A few icy patches here or there that are avoidable. In the upper quarter of the hike we put on microspikes because the snow/ice was getting difficult to avoid, and the spikes made things much easier. Other people were bare-booting it but it would be more difficult that way. Spikes came off on the dry summit, then we put them back on for the initial climb down the Indian Head trail, taking them off once the snow disappeared. Very little mud on the trail, and easily avoidable. I definitely recommend taking the Indian head trail at least one way, as it follows a pretty stream much of the way, and dips beneath the ledges that you can see if you look back up, while the Pemigewasset trail doesn't have much to offer other than a slightly quicker route. |
