A gorgeous day with very bright and warm temperatures above treeline. Tough climb on the Valley Way with a variety of trail conditions beginning with dry bare trail. Put on traction about half way up. Near the hut the snow was deeper and softened up. Evidence in a few places of monorail beginning. Gulfside trail to Airline had every trail condition imaginable: running water, snow & ice, bare rock, 3 foot drifts. Had to remove crampons since there was a lot of bare rock between snow and ice sections. Enjoyed the small summit area with its great 360 degree views. Ran out of time so skipped Mt. Adams. Used snowshoes for the descent of the Valley Way trail which worked well. |
