Working on getting ready to hit the 4k's with a new hiking buddy. I had hiked Mt. Monadnock several times in the past but always up and down from the state park trails. Figured this would add a nice spin to the hike and help with some of the distance aspects of the 4k's.Honestly this was very brutal on the knees overall, literally miles of rock scrambles. It was cold and raw starting up, and as we climbed higher we rose above the cloud layer. As we arrived at the summit of Monadnock the skies started changing from socked in to opening up with some partial views. The hike down to bald rock descended several steep rock cliffs/ledges, all ice free and dry. Bald Rock was extremely windy but the sun had come out and we were down to our teeshirts, great views of Grand Monadnock and out into the now cleared skies. Getting down to do drop was a bit hairy as the trail signs start getting a bit difficult to follow (nothing a compass and gps couldn't handle). Do drop had signs of light use with blow downs and a very minimally noticeable trail. We got off course a bit but took a bearing and continued down to the trail junction with the side foot trail. The trail up to Monte Rosa had some steeps and we were feeling pretty tired at this point. The wind was incredible when we got to the weather vane (super cool)so we departed shortly after arrival. The climb back up to Monadnock via Smith summit trail which was a series of rock ledges, scrambles, and was overall a pretty gentile approach to the summit. Back on the summit we parked in a low lying rock wall and had some water and a snack, as we finished the weather changed very abruptly, clouds moved back in and the winds were absolutely brutal. People scattered from the summit and we were unable to find Pumpelly from the summit, the wind didn't help. We eventually found our way and descended what would be the great knee grind of 2021. Feel good today and it was easily the most epic hike of Monadnock yet. |
