Road walk up Thompson to the old branch of the Black Cap connector where parking is now banned. Saw a group descending (the only people seen all evening). From bits of their conversation they may have meant to head for the other Thompson road trailhead.
Black Cap was the goal. Until the junction with the Peaked mountain connector snow was spotty or had been packed down to shallow slush. However, after the junction the trail was untraveled and the wet, sticky snow became deeper. untraveled. Since I didn't have snowshoes I went with plan B which was Peaked and Middle. There was one other set of prints on the Black Cap connector, however of a bear, for about 100 yards. (One advantage of wet snow is how well it preserves animal tracks).
Above 1100' on Peaked and Middle there was 1"-2" of wet snow off trail, but foot traffic had turned the trail itself into mostly 1/2 inch of slush with some wet or dry parts. Below 1100' (roughly for 3/4 mile from Thompson road parking on Middle mountain trail) the trail was surprisingly dry.
Above 1100' you may bareboot up, but microspikes recommended for the descent.
If there's a refreeze in the near future the trail will be very icy. |
