I was the only car in the lot when I arrived before dawn. Down low, about the first 1.75 miles were wet/muddy but little to no snow. Several small brook crossings that were all snow run off that were all easily navigated, but the dog loved the pools. The snow begins around mile 2, just as you climb steeply up away from the stream. It was early so the snow was a bit stiffer on the way up, but as the temperatures rose it became more sticky on the way down. Never needed spikes, but snow shoes were required, especially once you reached about 2.5 miles. I broke trail most of the way and although it was only a couple inches, it was still tough work because the snow was sticky and balling up on my snowshoes. The wet sticky snow became too much for the pup by about 3.5 miles so we stopped and took some beautiful shots of Laffayette then headed down. It was tricky coming down because the slow was slippery/slushy/wet. Bare boots were easier than traction because the snow was just balling up. Once past the snow it was quick moving. Didn't see a soul until I was within a mile of the lot. All in all great day even if we didn't make it to the ridge. |
