What a great adventure today. The Kelley Trail is a must. The climb up thru the box canyon is so nice with a cascading brook and interesting rock formations. The trail was mostly dry with good footing. The trek up to South Paugus (52WAV) via the Lawrence Trail was good traveling. A few slippery rocks and a short stretch of snow just before reaching South Paugus. Be sure you go all the way to the open ledges. When you reach to open slab of South Paugus there are a couple nice lookouts. There is one down to the right that opens up to unobstructed views of Mt Whiteface and Mt Passaconaway. Once back at the open slab, look for the sign for the Beeline trail. Step down off the short ledge and walk a short distance along the path and around a few bushes for a great view of Mt Chocorua.

As for the bushwhack to NE Paugus (only if you are working on the NH 500 list), this is a true backcountry bushwhack! We opted to take a faint break in the woods (off the Lawrence trail) that others had taken. Boy! This was a test of navigation skills, patience, and bodily abuse! Be ready for bumps and scraps climbing over numerous blowdowns, clothes torn on broken tree limbs, pushing your way thru dense stands of spruce, and falling into spruce traps and the like! This so called path was not easy to follow. We lost sight of it and made our own way most of the time using GPS. In the end, we did find the summit canister! On our way out we choose a route a little more southwest that avoided the massive blowdown field and saw less challenging. We earned this one!

For the remainder of the hike, we were happy to be on trail. We won't forget this one!
