| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Water levels low - easily crossed on rocks |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trails up to East and West Royce in great shape - lots of recent work, Basin rim in great shape - just one blowdown lying diagonal in the trail but can get around. Basin trail has 10+ years old Blowdowns - mostly above the Hermit falls loop - all really large but which for the most part can simply get across or around - one in an inconvenient location coming down the steeps, another one has a newer blowdown on top that given their position you'll needs to climb over - if an effort is made to remove any of these blowdowns it will almost certainly take a chainsaw. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw one puppy on Basin trail on the way down - some steeps but nothing to challenging - On this loop there is a long stretch without any water - from just above Mad river falls about 1.6 miles up Royce Trail to around a mile down the Basin Trail - over 8 miles without water including out and back to East Royce |
| Bugs: |
Mosquitoes and other small bugs a bit bothersome down low but up higher they didn't seem to be biting |

| Comments: |
A great loop hike in Evans notch though it includes a bit of a roadwalk -Great views in East Royce and a great view looking down of Basin Pond from a ledge just down the Basin trail from Rim junction. - it looks like recent trail work on the trails up to east and west royce. Trails were all dry with the exception of a couple of spots of mud that are easily avoided. Note that the actual summit of East Royce is not at the summit sign - you need to follow a hard path the the actual summit which is very obvious to follow - the ledges beyond the actual summit are definitely worth a visit - just continue following the herd path. |
