About 1/2 mile down the old logging road, FR304, I noticed what appeared to be an older overgrown logging rd but decided to continue on looking for the old "Double Trouble Nubble Trail" I had read about farther on. At about 1 mile, just after one of many drainages, this one containing some water although most were dry, I found an obvious trail on the right hand side. The trail rose gradually for a time and was fairly easy to follow until it came to a large cave to the right of the trail. From here it became more difficult to follow and steepened greatly. I believe that the name "Double Trouble" may come from two scrambles just before reaching the sub-peak below PAtN one of which was at 10 feet tall at a minimum of 70 degrees. I don't think I could have gotten up without the aid of a long hanging root. From the sub-peak there was a herd path to the summit.
On the way down I played it safe bushwhacking down the ridge to the North and then following the path of least resistance to the East, eventually coming back out to FR304 on the overgrown road I had seen at 1/2 mile. Mostly open bushwhack down, I do not recommend the DTN trail that I took up unless all in your party are comfortable with heights. |
