Comments: Had a nice two-night overnight on the north side of Mt. Hancock and ascended the Stinger Slide, with a side trip to the 3400’ peak at the end of NW Hancock’s northern ridge. Tough bushwhacking with such high temps and humidity.

On Monday AM, from my campsite well south of the Wilderness Trail, I got an early start and rock-hopped up a brookbed to the base of the Stinger Slide. As the track narrowed and the slide began in earnest, I encountered wet and slimy slab, requiring many bypasses through thick woods on the west side of the track. About halfway up, I reached the point where I had turned back last February due to avalanche conditions; that memorable trip had given me a preview of the unique views over to Bondcliff. Now that the snow was gone, I found this slide to be a mix of small loose rocks and larger exfoliating slab. The slope angle is steep, and there are numerous ledges to deal with, though none too large. At the top of the slide, I could see my next objectives: peak 3400 (approx.) and a secluded ledge viewpoint on its west slopes. Once I reached the ridge, the woods were nice and open along the knife-edge ridge to the peak. After some searching, I stumbled upon the view ledge and found that it provided excellent views of the upper section of the slide! Unfortunately I couldn’t stay long, as I wanted to make it down before the afternoon thunderstorms. I descended directly down the northern slope through mostly open woods, crossing numerous old logging roads and reaching my tent a few hours before the skies opened up. On return Tuesday morning, the Wilderness and East Side trails were rather muddy from the precipitation. A great trip and a memorable slide adventure.
