I bushwhacked the ridge to the west of Osceola’s Split Cliff, with the objective of finding a ledge with a straight-ahead view of the Dog Leg Slide and the cliff. The ridge was mostly open woods until around 3300 ft., where it narrowed and the vegetation became much more dense; at 3400 ft. I encountered a bear den at the base of a dwarf shrub zone. I skirted around the fragile plants and the den, pushing through thick spruce and emerging onto more level terrain; from here, I made a number of steep bushwhacks down the E side of the ridge to look for a good viewpoint. In most cases, I was turned back by excessively steep terrain and false steps, though I eventually found a cliff that was marginally accessible; the view from here was excellent & much different from the standard Middle Osceola vantage. After topping out on Middle Peak I followed the herd path over to West Osceola, enjoyed a two-hour lunch on Peggy’s Perch and then headed down to the East Pond Trail. A fantastic outing, and it was great to chat with Steve Smith on the East Pond Trail as well! |
