Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We did a large loop starting from the Carriage Road. The book states that the last 4/10ths or so can be done by "careful drivers." This is, practically, no longer the case. I have driven down many crappy roads in the whites in our sedan, but this one is impassable to anyone that does not have a high clearance vehicle. The road is in complete disrepair, and at times its crown is at least a foot higher than where your tires would be; you must have a high clearance truck to make this last section. The pavement has come up in large chunks, or has been completely washed away leaving 3 foot deep washouts. Just hike the road for a few tenths.

Comments
Comments: Great loop around and over the mountain today. At Breezy Point at the trailhead of the Carriage Road, just stay to the right instead of following the sign for Breezy Point; these two quickly reconnect and we actually briefly got off-trail going that way. There appears to be a decent amount of camping going on in the fields there, despite signs being posted stating 1/4 miles distance from the trail, however it's just a field and not in the woods or otherwise visible from the trail. Trails all in good shape, though very damp from all the rain, so pay attention to your footing.

Plenty is said about the other trails so not much to note there, however, I will vouch for the Al Merrill Loop. It does add a few miles to the hike, but it was very pleasant. The trail is very wide with good footing almost the whole way, and is very gradual. It's also very lightly trafficked, as evidenced by the hundreds of spider webs I must have broke on the trail that day. The restricted view up top is OK, but I wouldn't go just for that. It could also be a good training loop for someone starting out or coming back from an injury as you still get some elevation but at a gradual pace.

All in all great day on Moosilauke.
