This is the long way to these two peaks but was a nice, moderate walk up ATV roads to our starting point. For the north peak, we decided to follow Bill Cronin’s directions: we followed Winter Road a short ways to a gravel driveway marked ‘Deadend, Do Not Enter’, no prohibitions to foot traffic, followed the driveway to a cabin and woodshed and entered a snowmobile trail on the back right. We followed this sometimes wet, eventually bog like trail as far as we could before heading into open woods towards the peak. We crossed over several bumps before reaching the recognized highpoint. After signing in, we decided to try dropping straight down to the road rather than backtracking. Not a good plan: woods were pretty overgrown with hobble bush and the closer we got to the col, pencil pine was the rule of the day! We finally made it out and walked back up Winter Road to a point just below the summit of Cowan Hill. We entered the woods and were treated to open woods and a moderate grade all the way to the summit. Signed in and descended on the same route. Walked back up Winter Road to Cowen Hill Road and down to our car. |
